Reviews

Now in the rare diesel category, EMD’s E and F units were once the prominent form of motive power on many of the country’s main lines. This new, colorful hour-long DVD researches the history of EMD E and F units from their initial introduction to their waning years and beyond: a number of these treasured units still operate on short lines and tourist railroads.

Both E and F units were good examples of excellent industrial design when they were first introduced and have intrigued railroaders ever since. The first four FT units, produced in 1939 by EMD, led the way for F2s, F3s, F7s, F9s, FP7s, FP9s and FL9s. E units also progressed through the years from the E3 to the E9s. During this presentation, many well-known rail experts present their cases for the popularity of these units; in addition, numerous illustrations of early and later E and F units, many pulling name passenger trains as well as freight trains, are shown as examples of this breed of locomotive.

I think nearly every railfan will delight in this well-done, thorough presentation that provides historical background information, excellent documentation of the years F and E units were in regular usage, and up-to-date action footage of these popular units still in service today across the country.
